For the first time in many years, the Candalaria 5th Grade class is headed to Outdoor School! Scheduled for late April, Outdoor School is an exciting opportunity for the students to participate in hands-on learning outside the classroom. Outdoor School will replace our traditional 5th Grade year-end party, and will allow the 5th graders to participate in Field Day.
Outdoor School will be located at Canyonview Camp, just outside Silverton. It combines a classic camp setting and activities with the opportunity to learn about the amazing outdoor landscape here in Oregon. The camp sits in a beautiful, safe setting which will allow for fun, adventure and learning.
The 5th Grade Outdoor School Committee has been busy raising money to pay for this opportunity, through community events like Movie Night, Bingo Night and Popcorn Fridays. Thanks to the support of our amazing Candalaria Community, we are well on our way to our goal!
We ask for your continued support in our upcoming events. A successful pilot year is vital in paving the way for Outdoor School for all future 5th graders. This is an experience that students will look forward to throughout their years at Candalaria, and one that they will remember for a lifetime.
Join the 100 Mile Club at Candalaria!
What is it?
The 100 Mile Club is a year-long, fun and social way to get your kids moving! Club participants meet at the Covered Area behind the school every Tuesday and Friday immediately after school. Participants sign in and then run or walk around the track for 50 minutes. Every time the child completes a lap he or she will receive a popsicle stick. At 4:20, students will again gather in the covered area to stretch and have their sticks counted. Students will be ready for pick-up at 4:30.
Students will receive prizes at the 25, 50, 75, and 100 mile mark. We understand that not every student will reach 100 miles, but we hope that all of our students will become healthier as they live a more active lifestyle.
We expect that participating students sign in and out each time they come to the club meeting. Once students sign in, they are expected to walk or run around the track. They are not allowed to go to the playground unless a parent has signed them out.
Weather and Water
The 100 Mile Club will meet every Tuesday and Friday that school is in session. We will run in the rain so have your child be prepared. Also, please make sure that your child has a water bottle. This is especially important when it’s hot.
The joining fee for the 100 Mile Club is $10. This covers the cost of the prizes--including the T-shirt that students will receive if they complete 25 miles. Scholarships are available upon request.
By Laura Mullenbach, Candalaria OBOB Committee
In a couple of months, our school will begin the Battle of the Books competition. Oregon Battle of the Books has a long tradition of excellence at Candalaria. OBOB is promoted as a friendly competition for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders to encourage them to read different genres of literature and authors, as well as develop teamwork.
Many of the students formed teams already or are in the process of forming them. If your student wishes to be on a team, but is not yet, we encourage to talk with their teacher. Each team consists of 4 students. Each team member needs to read at least 4 different titles to start with from the list of books. Teams may organize this arrangement as they wish. Some students might want to read all of the 16 titles. We will post and announce the team rosters prior to the competitions.
The actual “battles” begin in January 2016 in the media center/library. Parent volunteers will help with leading the battles during each grade’s lunch recess period. Two teams will battle for 15 minutes with questions from the books. Each team will battle at least twice during the weeks of competition. The top teams will advance. We encourage you to come and watch your child and their team! Our school’s top team will move on to battle the top teams from other schools in the district.
